The different hybrid
cultivars of Escallonia can make great evergreen hedge plants. The
most popular hedging varieties are crosses between Escallonia rubra
and virgata.
Flower colours range
from white to pink to red. Escallonia varieties with an upright
habit make the most suitable hedge plants. Such examples include:
- White - Escallonia
'iveyi'
- Pink - Escallonia
'Apple Blossom'
- Red - Escallonia 'Crimson
Spire'
Escallonia has the ability
to tolerate drought and lime soils. All the Escallonia rubra hybrids
are hardy and especially useful for their ability to withstand coastal
exposure.
Clip plants annually
after flowering to keep a garden hedge neat or formal. Alternatively
for shelter or stock hedging, leave them to grow untamed up to 2.5
to 4m tall.
