Here in New Zealand, Phormium tenax is a common sight and a very useful plant for providing shelter in the windiest, harshest conditions. It's popularity as a garden plant is spreading throughout the world, and rightly so.

Although there are many smaller cultivars of Phormium tenax, the species is very vigourous and will grow quite large - up to 4m tall.
